The mission of the Oneida County Sheriff's Office is to safeguard life, property and public order. Members of the Sheriff's Office will always act not for themselves, but for the good of the public they serve; and at all times respect and protect the constitutional rights of all persons.

Members of the Sheriff's Office shall strive to perform their duties with the highest level of professionalism, and will provide all citizens with those services necessary for a safe, secure, and crime-free environment in which to live and work.


Goals and Objectives of the Law Enforcement Division

  • Protect life and property.
  • Deter and prevent crime.
  • Preserve public peace and maintain order.
  • Enforce all laws and ordinances within jurisdiction.
  • Detect and arrest offenders.
  • Execute criminal processes in accordance with law.
  • Educate public.

Specific Law Enforcement Objectives for 2020

  • Finalize a transition to a county-wide records management system.  This will provide real time access to criminal justice information which will be shared between several county agencies.
  • Make necessary adjustments to deal with the challenges presented by New York State’s No Bail Legislation and Discovery Law Changes.  This will require staffing changes to the warrants unit as well as promoting timely information sharing with the district attorney’s office.
  • Promote the welfare of animals by implementing and maintaining an Animal Abuse Registry.
  • Work towards providing more resources and support for catastrophic events throughout the region.  This would involve more specialized training of members in disaster incidents, and the greater availability of agency drone pilots to support critical incident operations.

Assessment of 2019 Goals and Objectives

  • The agency was able to replace the retiring K9 Cero (Explosives Detection) with K9 Erika (Explosives Detection).  We also added K9 Enzo who detects narcotics, not including marijuana.
  • The agency staffed the City of Utica School District, Remsen School District, Vernon Verona Sherrill School District and Adirondack School Districts with Special Patrol Officers. We were able to train many of these officers at the Department of Homeland Security in Active Shooter.  This supplements the patrol division in safeguarding our children and school staff in the educational setting.
  • The agency is in the final stages of full implementation of Lexipol, which provides legally sound and up-to-date policies.  These policies are delivered on-line which provides easy access to deputies who are working in the field.  All of the policy changes are tracked electronically to document review and understanding of the directives.
  • The agency added seven new members to our peer support team in 2019.  We work collaboratively with the Oneida County Employee Assistance Program, the New York State Police Employee Assistance Program and the Peer Support Coordinator with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.  Our agency trained five members through the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, Inc. The courses of study were Assisting Individuals in Crisis and Group Crisis Intervention, which was provided by the Western New York Law Enforcement Helpline.  These partnerships have provided our agency with a regional approach focused on promoting officer wellness.
